The Taj
It's been a few days since we arrived in Delhi. We seem to be over jet lag for the most part. The first day we were here, we were asleep by 4:30 in the afternoon!Yesterday we took a surprise trip to one of the 7 wonders of the world. We say surprise because it certainly wasn't on the agenda for our time here. God has a way of surprising us.
We took the train at 6 in the morning to Agra. Our first train experience in the country was pleasant- chai, breakfast, the morning paper, a bottle of water, what more could we ask for? 2 hours later we arrived in Agra. We haggled for a taxi to take us to the sites. We had the rest of the day to spend in Agra. Here's what we were blessed to see:

The Red Fort
The Taj was by far the highlight of the day. It was amazing to be able to witness in person what we only saw in pictures before yesterday. It was amazing to marvel at how God gifts people to be able to construct and craft such magnificent monuments. For instance, we learned at a marble factory in Agra that each piece (petal, stem, etc.) of every flower that is found on the Taj had to be hand carved and then placed into the marble. These flowers are found all over the building. It could take days, if not weeks or months to construct a single arrangement. Pretty amazing. This picture is an example of the intricate artwork that is found all over the building.
The rest of our day was spent trying to talk our taxi driver out of taking us to the normal tourist traps. Our efforts were futile. We thought the day would never end. The train ride back to Delhi was nothing like the one we took to get there. It took twice as long, there was no meal or drinks and we got to witness Indian children acting like monkeys climbing on the luggage racks and chair tops. Craziness. We finally got back at midnight. What a day!
